Chengdu is the capital of China’s Sichuan province, and on the surface, doesn’t seem like the most exciting destination in Eastern Asia. But visitors to Chengdu quickly find that the city’s relaxed personality and historical significance make it a great place to visit. Chengdu is famous for its traditional tea houses, usually furnished with bamboo chairs and wooden tables, serving jasmine-infused brews passed down for centuries. The Sichuan province is famous for its cuisine as well, using chili peppers, garlic, and a huge variety of spices to create flavors that are always bold and never boring.

For a bit of history and outdoor adventure, be sure to visit Mount Qingcheng, an important center of Taoism in China. There are 36 peaks and a beautiful waterfall on the mountain, and many sacred temples to visit as well. The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuary can be found here as well, housing and protecting these adorable national treasures so that the species can carry on.
